Ah...Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. As a little girl, I remember staring in awe at the Chocolate Room, my mouth watering and my eyes beginning to glaze over. Buttercups and chocolate and huge gummy bears! But when I got a little older, I watched it again. I began to notice the depth of the movie. No, this was not just an aesthetic, gastronomically tantalizing masterpiece. The movie is also a thematic masterpiece. And I should know. I'm an English major. But besides all that, the movie actually gets to me. At the end, I'm cheering for the good little boy; the one that deserves Mr. Wonka's factory. I admire Mr. Wonka and am quite troubled when he is short with Charlie. I'm always glad to see Veruca slide down the egg chute (even though I do use her name as my handle on occasion). And I do so enjoy it when the Oompa Loompas bestow their vast knowledge upon me yet again. Unlike most children, I never read the book. Not until a couple of years ago, that is. Reading Dahl's work as an adult was marvellous, but I still regret not reading his work in my more imaginative years. If you haven't already, read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. And then there's the next book, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. I plan on gobbling up more of his books as soon as possible. If you'd like more information about me, visit my main page. |
