By the way, if you've been wondering where I've been, I've been editing over at the Open Directory Project. If you don't know what that is, it's a Yahoo-like category index of Web sites. But instead of nameless, faceless Yahoo employees adding and maintaining sites in the directory, volunteer editors maintain the ODP directory and make it the best it can be. As they say, "humans do it better"! Many popular search engines (like Google) use the ODP listings as the directory version of their site, so you've probably been using ODP without knowing it.

If you like to edit and you have a passion, I highly recommend finding a category about that passion and applying to edit it. (After you find the category you want to edit, just click the "become an editor" link at the top.)

Now they've got me wanting to form a tech workers union in my area!
In Silicon Valley, the IBM union initiative drew minimal interest at first, said Louis Rocha, president of CWA Local 9423. Then earlier this year, IBM announced plans to sell its hard disk drive business in San Jose to Hitachi, potentially threatening thousands of jobs. Since then more IBM employees have showed up at meetings, Rocha said...That interest is bound to grow as more tech workers lose their jobs and recognize how employees in other countries are better protected.
